Greater Arms of Younger Sons of the Emperor. The Lesser Arms was the same as the Heir to the Throne but the shield had a Black border charged with silver and gold Lion's Heads.
In 1857 the "Special Signs" of certain members of the Imperial Family was approved. Above is shown the Anchors of Grand Duke Constantin Nikolayevich signifying his position as General Admiral. The Grand Duke Nikolai Nikolayevich had two crossed Pole Axes behind his Shield signifying his position as Inspector-General of Engineers. Grand Duke Mihail Nikolayevich hade two crossed Gun Barrels denoting his position as Ordnance-General.

Fascinating but I find such elaborate and cluttered achievements excessively ostentatious and impractical.
I know they're important people, but there are limits!

Well as for Monarchs there developed a rather elaborate style of heraldry during the times. This is not only in Russia but all over Europe, one example is the Greater Arms of the King of Prussia who had 48 Fields and three ineschutcheons representing the territories he ruled. One can understand that there also was a Middle and a Lesser Arms.

These arms were desinged in 1856 and revised in 1909*. They might better be described as those of the Imperial House of Romanov-Holstein-Gottorp.

The system for more distant members of the Imperial House is actually more complicated than that described on the earlier referenced website. The arms depicted above are the greater coat-of-arms of the younger sons of grandsons of the Emperor in the direct male line with the title of Princes of the Imperial Blood and the style of Serenity. The eldest son of each of the grandsons of the Emperor in the direct male line had different greater and lesser arms. The greater arms included a golden Imperial Pavillion (rather than the manteau shown above) semey of black Russian eagles llined with ermine and supported by a pair of golden griffins. These eldest sons of the grandosons of the Emperor held the title of Princes of the Imperial Blood and the style of Highness*.
